The Meteorological Service of New Zealand (MetService) is unique as the world’s only fully commercial national meteorological service. It is an international leader in the supply of weather data visualisation and automated prediction technology solutions that give a competitive edge to broadcasting, energy, retail, transport and other industry clients.

MetService has established innovative weather risk-management solutions for transport agencies, airports, airlines, road maintenance operations and power companies. Its collaboration with the New Zealand Transport Agency to develop a winter road maintenance programme was recognised with a 3M Traffic Safety Innovation Award in 2011.

More recently, MetService collaborated with Downer Road Science to establish the environmental matrix and parameters in an online dashboard display that informs optimal application of roading material.

MetService has been designing weather information and communication solutions for broadcast and print media internationally for more than 10 years. MetService’s state-of-the-art weather graphics and virtual reality display system, Weatherscape XT, is used by many leading international broadcasters including the BBC, Australia’s 7, 9 and Ten networks, Channel 3 in Thailand, TG4, Nelonen, NOS and Antenna 1 in Europe, TVNZ in New Zealand, and TVB and Phoenix TV in Hong Kong.

Through its consumer websites and apps, MetService provides a comprehensive range of public weather information. The ‘feels like’ factor, clothing layers and sun-protection indicators help people decide what to wear, while weather images and page elements such as webcams, traffic cameras and rain radar are automatically populated according to the user’s location. MetService ranks in the top five most-visited New Zealand commercial website brands, and has had more than 460,000 app downloads.
